On Saturday September 30, 2023, all Michipicoten First Nation, Chapleau Cree First Nation, Missanabie Cree First Nation and Wawa residents were invited by Dawn Charbonneau of Wawa to meet at Wawa Post Office at 4:00pm and begin the walk (or bike) down Broadway Avenue and Mission Road to the Tourist Info Centre/Wawa Goose to honour the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remember those who did not. There were speakers, and opportunities for elders and survivors to speak and share. Everyone showed support by wearing orange, some brought signs, and Michipicoten First Nation members and staff walked proudly with MFN flag. At the Tourist Information Centre, there was juice and water for those who attended which was generously donated by Young’s General Store. The weather was rainy, but it didn’t stop from being an amazing turnout to honour those who were and are affected by Residential Schools.
