Renewing your Status Card
**Appointments must be made before the IRA can see you.**
Indian Registration Administrators (IRAs) are First Nation employees on reserves who do work related to registration administration on behalf of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). They are also designated as a trusted source for registration and status cards.
Their roles may vary from First Nation to First Nation. They are assigned specific responsibilities by the Registrar, and are able to:
- help First Nation members apply for registration and status cards
- maintain the accuracy of the Indian Register
- maintain membership lists
There are two types of cards; Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) is the laminated version which is issued by most First Nations’ band offices throughout Canada and the new Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS), which is currently only being issued by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) at https://www.sac-isc.gc.ca/eng/1100100032380/1572461388012. The CIS cards can be issued from the Michipicoten First Nation Administration Building (107 Hiawatha Drive) by appointment only.

New Registrations
NEW REGISTRATIONS, to access programs and services available to First Nations, such as health, dental and education, a person must be registered as an Indian in Canada. The Indian Act provides the rules that a person must follow in order to register for Indian Status. The decision to apply for Indian Status is voluntary – registration does not happen automatically. There are different processes for people born before and after April 17, 1985, when Bill C-31 was enacted as follows:
If you were born on or after April 17, 1985:
Indian Registration Administrators can only report the births of individuals born on or after this date and are entitled to be registered as a Status Indian in accordance with the Indian Act. The following individuals are not entitled to be registered:
- An individual born to a 6(2) parent and a non-Indian parent, or
- An individual born to a non-Indian father and mother who acquired Indian Status through a prior marriage to an Indian man.
If you were born before April 17, 1985:
Adults wishing to register under the Indian Act will be required to complete the appropriate Application(s) subject to the registration criteria and detailed documentation requirements as contained in each application.
Required Documents:
- Application for Registration of a Minor Child under the Indian Act, requires an original birth certificate (listing the parents’ names).
- Application for Registration of an Adult under the Indian Act.
The following Indian Registration forms are applicable for Bill C-3 Applicants only, applicants will need to complete and submit both forms.
- Amendments – Gender Equity in Indian Registration Act Application for Registration and Secure Certificate of Indian Status.
- Registration and Secure Certificate of Indian Status (in-Canada SCIS) Guarantor Declaration.
