COUNCILLOR
PEGGY RICE
Chi miigwetch for placing your trust in me as Councillor. My little family is relocating to the reserve next month! I strive to ensure that the 7 Grandfather Teachings are reflected in my personal and professional activities every day. I did not grow up with our culture, however I have embraced it. I am well aware of the various barriers, challenges, opportunities and rights that exist for Indigenous peoples, and in particular for MFN members. The adage I choose to live by is “Be kind and always stay humble”. I believe the needs and vision of our people who reside on and off reserve may differ at times, but they are equally important. I respect other’s experiences, choices, and methods of sharing and am excited that newly elected Council is off to a great start! In addition to prioritizing the RST annuities, I remain committed to:
- Advocate strongly for the development of a community engagement strategy to ensure our people are engaged in various methods, on an ongoing basis; encourage and increase community engagement;
- Listen to the voices of our people, bring issues forward and work productively with Chief and Council to identify and advance community-driven priorities;
- Advocate strongly for transparency and accountability to the entire MFN community, regardless of residency location;
- Advocate strongly for ongoing community engagement in the form of a Communications Plan or Policy (internal and external);
- Advocate for Council to revisit the current MFN organization chart, update it to align with MFN strategic plan, support Indigenous employee recruitment and capacity development, and bring in much needed professional IT and other innovative services as required;
- Be truthful at all times and when mistakes or misunderstandings occur, take immediate corrective action; and
- Invest applicable time and skills as required to be the best Councillor I can be for the duration of my term.
