COUNCILLOR

   WENDY PETERSON SHAWANA

I am Wendy Peterson Shawana, honored to carry the spirit name Ekinoomaaget Ogichidaa, meaning “Teacher Warrior”, migizi dodem (Eagle clan). As the daughter of John Peterson (baa) – our esteemed Chief from 1999 to 2003 – and Lorraine Boyer, a dedicated Councilor from 2003- 2005. I am deeply rooted in a legacy of leadership and community service. Born and raised in Wawa, I moved to Michipicoten (MFN) at the age of twelve, embarking on a journey that led me to graduate from Michipicoten High School. My education continued at Confederation College, where I studied Aboriginal Law and Advocacy.

I have had the honour of serving MFN in various roles, including as a Librarian and Education Counsellor/Indian Registry Administrator. Through my work, I have facilitated and coordinated meaningful projects, such as MFN artifacts and cultural workshops focused on sweetgrass teachings, dreamcatcher creation, beading and Bannock making. I played a key role in establishing the MFN Youth Council and supported vital fundraising events. My commitment to empowering students/youth reflects my belief in their potential, and I have collaborated closely with Aboriginal Support Workers and educational institutions to uplift our community.

I find joy in fishing and hunting, as well as in medicine picking, baking and crafting. I am a proud First Nation business owner and reside on reserve with my husband, Junior Shawana and my son, Caleb Swanson.
