Our services are offered in various locations:

  • Band Office (Band Hall) (107 Hiawatha Drive, Michipicoten First Nation) which offers Administration, Communications, Education, Membership and Public Works staff and services.
  • Carpentry Shop (13 Whitesands Drive, Michipicoten First Nation) which offers Operations & Maintenance staff and services.
  • Family Well-Being Lodge – Wawa location (3 Maple Street, Wawa) which offers cultural programming and supports and the location for our Lands & Environmental Stewardship staff.
  • Health Centre (109 Hiawatha Drive, Michipicoten First Nation) which offers Health & Social Services supports.
  • Ganaw-Zhawenjige Child Welfare Office (402 Albert Street East, Sault Ste. Marie) which offers child welfare supports (Band Representatives).
  • MFN Satellite Office (464 Albert Street East, Sault Ste Marie) which supports Chief and Council, Lands & Environmental Stewardship and Health & Social Services (Jordan’s Principle & NNADAP). 

 

All offices are open:

  • Monday to Thursday from 8:00am-4:30pm (closed for lunch from 12:00pm-12:30pm)
  • Friday from 8:00am-1:30pm
  • Closed weekends and all major Canadian & First Nation holidays.

Michipicoten First Nation is undertaking an additions to reserve (ATR) project to add our fee simple lands to the reserve. This process will add over 475 hectares of land acquired by Michipicoten between 2002 and 2018 to reserve.

CHANGES TO THE POLICY FOR 2025-2026

The 2025-2026 Better Living Program (BLP) benefit, effective June 25th, 2025, has seen significant changes:

  • Members no longer need to submit receipts to receive this benefit
  • Payment for the 2025-2026 benefit year will automatically be made to all eligibility-confirmed members by July 15th, 2025
  • All payments will now be issued by direct deposit

Child Welfare Services - Band Representatives

Michipicoten First Nation Band Representative and Child Advocate

Acts on behalf of Michipicoten First Nation (MFN) as a party under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, to advocate for the best interests of children affiliated with MFN and involved with Child Welfare Agencies, both on and off reserve.

  • Provides support to MFN families in all Child Welfare matters
  • Accompany Child Welfare Agencies during investigations and home visits
  • Advocate to maintain family units, and community cultural ties
  • Ensure that MFN members are fully aware of their rights and understand the child and family service system
  • Follow up with family and child welfare workers to stay up to date and to ensure service plans/plans of care are being implemented and identify the need for changes or potential solutions.

There are two types of cards; Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) is the laminated version which is issued by most First Nations’ band offices throughout Canada and the new Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS), which is currently only being issued by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) at https://www.sac-isc.gc.ca/eng/1100100032380/1572461388012The CIS cards can be issued from the Michipicoten First Nation Administration Building (107 Hiawatha Drive) by appointment only.

Once you are registered as a new Michipicoten First Nation member, please contact us to provide your mailing address. ISC only provides our Membership Administrator with your Name, Date of Birth, and Band Number. They do not provide your mailing address.

New Governance Reform Project

Council has established a Special Committee on Governance who has been tasked with a Governance Reform Project. The Project is looking to enhance the Nation’s leadership selection process through the development of an Election Law and will re-examine the Council’s role, responsibility and accountability to its members by amending Michipicoten First Nation’s Chi-Naaknigewin (Constitution) and Council Policies and Procedures.

A. The types of assistance includes transportation, meals, accommodations, mileage, vision care, dental care, mental health counselling, medical supplies and equipment (Wheelchair, Ramps, Mobility Scooter…) prescription drugs and select over-the-counter products. There may be extra costs associated with eye glasses, dentures, or hearing aids (a predetermination can be completed).
